PERINATAL | POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION
Postpartum depression is quite common and often times it goes untreated because mothers feel quite ashamed that they are depressed at a time when society expects them to be happy and fulfilled. This is not always the case. Having a baby can be a wonderful experience, yet a difficult and emotionally taxing one. Old issues about past relationships may arise, especially unresolved conflicts with the mother’s own parents. These issues have an impact in the way the mother relates to the baby and this in turn has a profound effect on the baby’s cognitive, social and emotional development.
Postpartum depression can begin during pregnancy and up to a year after the baby is born. Its symptoms may include:
Feelings of sadness
Severe mood swings
Anxiety
Irritability and anger
Trouble sleeping
Excessive fatigue
Feelings of inadequacy, shame or guilt
Decreased or loss of interest in sex and/or relationships
Postpartum Depression is a treatable condition and the earlier it can be addressed the better outcome the treatment will yield. Learn more about treatment.
